BASIC REQUIREMENTS AND THE NECESSARY TIME- INTERVAL FOR DAN GRADES WITHIN KWF
Belt: Black
Dan and Title: Sho-Dan: Senpai
Time: Minimum 1year as 1st Kyu.
Summer camps: Must participate at the Summer camp the year before grading.
· Kata: Saifa, Pinan Ichi to Go in Ura.
· Knowledge of self-defense.
· Better physical condition than for 1st kyu.
· Jiyu Kumite: 20 fights of 60 seconds.
· Must contribute to your National Federation (Organization).
· Be at least 16 years of age.

Dan and Title: Ni-Dan: Senpai
Time: Minimum 2 years as 1st Dan.
Summer camps: From 1st Dan grading minimum 1 Summer - camp. And must participate at the camp before grading.
· Kata: Seipai, Seienchin.
· Excellent physical condition. Better than for 1st Dan.
· Jiyu Kumite: 30 fights of 60 seconds.
· Contributed well for the National Federation (Organization).
· Must be a National Judge.
· Attend an official Instructor’s course from the National Federation. (Organization or the National Karate Federation)
· Be at least 18 years of age.

Dan and Title: San-Dan: Sensei
Time: Minimum 3 years as 2nd Dan.
Summer camps: From 2nd Dan grading minimum 2 Summer camps. And must participate at the camp before grading.
· Kata: Kanku, Garyu.
· Perform own kata (as well written).
· Jiyu Kumite: 40 fights of 60 seconds.
· Must be an International Judge and National Referee.
. Have a letter of recommendation from National President and dojo Leader.
- Be at least 23 years.
- Possible participation as Instructor at Summer Camps will be taking into consideration.

Dan and title: Yon-Dan Sensei
Time: Minimum 4 years as 3rd Dan.
Summer camps: From 3rd Dan grading minimum 3 summer camps. And must participate at the camp before grading.
- Kata: Sushiho.
· Perform own kata (as well written).
· Jiyu Kumite: 40 fights of 60 seconds.
· Must be an International Referee.
· Participate on a regular basis as Referee.
- Have a letter of recommendation from the National President and own dojo Leader.
- Be at least 28 years.
- Conduct examination in a Panel which must be include Shihan Antonio Pinero or Shihan Loek Hollander.

Dan and title: Go-Dan Shihan = 5th
Time: Minimum 5 years as 4th Dan.
- Conduct examinations in front of KWF s Grading Panel .Which must include Shihan Antonio Pinero or Shihan Loek Hollander.
- Have a letter of recommendation from the National President and dojo Leader.
- Be at least 35 years.
- Apply a written story of your Kyokushin career.

Dan and title: Roku-Dan Shihan = 6th
Time: Minimum 6 years as 5th Dan.
Have made an outstanding contribution to
the advancement of Kyokushin within the National and International Federations.
- Have a letter of recommendation from the National President and dojo Leader and the EKF/ KWF board.
- Be at least 45 years.
- Apply a written story of your Kyokushin career.

Belt: Black
Dan and title: Nana-Dan Shihan = 7th
• This grade is only recommended by Members of KWF’s Board.
• It must be an outstanding Person who is highly respected, and outstanding Representative Nationally and Internationally of his country, and be revered as a Kyokushin Karateka.
• Have made a long time and significant effort for EKF / KWF and Kyokushin in different ways and levels.
Written examination:
In addition, all Candidates seeking for promotion to the next grade could be asked to undertake a written examination prepared by the KWF, based both on advanced terminology, philosophy and competition rules for the degree in question.
The candidate's age and physical abilities, personality and contribution to KWF play’s a significant role in the grading of degrees higher than 3rd Dan.
General information for Sensei and Shihan applicants
- Up and included 4th Dan grade the work you do in your own club and National Federation is of utmost importance. This has less relevance for a Shihan grade.
- For a Shihan grade you must submit a written history of yourself. See the points below under National and International.
- One of the most important issues for a Shihan grade is to work solely for other students both Nationally and Internationally and devote yourself to Kyokushin in your country. Being humble and devotional.
- Support your Leader in your country 100%. Work for the Federation Nationally and Internationally.
- A Shihan application MUST be brought to the KWF board for the decision. More than 50 % of the votes must be positive to approve the grade.
- The workflow of an application for Shihan is as follows:
- Your Club’s Board recommends you.
- Your National Organizations Board recommends you.
- Your CR sends the application to the EKF”s board. ( Valid for Europe only)
- The EKF Board sends the application to the KWF Board.
- You must be a person with great respect in your Country and you must work hard for your Country to grow Kyokushin even more.
The points below are guidelines of points you must submit in your written application:
National
- Describe the work you have been doing for your National Federation.
- How many National Championships have you arranged during the last 5 years?
- Describe the work as an Organizer you have done for your Organization’s Summer camps, Winter camps or others.
- How many classes/ weekly are you instructing in your own dojo or others?
- Describe the work you have done in your dojo, National as well as in the International Federation.
- Your relationship with your National Karate or Budo Federation. Attending meetings, seminars or others.
- Describe your desire to develop and support Kyokushin in the future. What kind of work are you willing to contribute with?
International
- Results of your own club fighters among the top 3 in the EC/WC. This must be persons that you have trained yourself!
- How many years have you been active as an International Judge/Referee since your 3rd Dan examination?
- How many International Summer Camps have you attended? Where and when?
- Describe the work you have done for the EKF and KWF Board.
Procedures for Black Belt exams
- All black belt exams will take place in principle at National and International Summer Camps only once a year.
- At all exams an Examination Panel must perform the examination and should be composed by a minimum number of 3 persons and a maximum number of 5 persons.
- The Examination Panel can do exams up to the following grades:
- When the Panel is formed by a 6th Dan and a 4th Dan or other black belts can make exam up to 4th Dan. All applicants must fulfill the obligatory black belt requirements. (In such Panel must be include Shihan Antonio Pinero or Shihan Loek Hollander).
- When the Panel is formed by a 5th Dan and a 3rd Dan or other black belts the Panel can make exam up to 3rd Dan. All applicants must fulfill the obligatory black belt requirements.
- When the Panel is formed by a 4th Dan and other black belts can make exam up to 2nd Dan. All applicants must fulfill the obligatory black belt requirements.
- When the Panel is formed by a 3rd Dan and other black belts can make exam up to 1st Dan. All applicants must fulfill the obligatory black belt requirements.
- When the Panel is formed by a 2nd Dan and other black belts can make exam up to 1st Dan and 1st kyu. All applicants must fulfill the obligatory black belt requirements.
- All the above conditions must be obligatory for holding Black Belt exams. No one individually can hold Black Belt exams. To hold exams outside of his/ hers country it is obligatory to apply for a written authorization from the KWF Technical Director Shihan Antonio Pinero and KWF President Shihan Loek Hollander.
- In case of not fulfillment of these requirements, no grades will be recognized.
- When a candidate wish to make an exam outside of his/ hers own Country the candidate must have a written permission from his/ hers National President.
- For 4th Dan and up it is obligatory to have either Shihan Antonio Pinero or Shihan Loek Hollander to be present at the exam. Or an appointed person by Shihan Antonio Pinero.
